Brenham, Texas (KBTX) — The Brenham community gathered Tuesday following the devastating death of 10-year-old Devah Woods.
The bridge across Old Mill Creek has become a monument to Deva as the community handles the heartbreak and prays for healing.
As Deva’s search continued until Monday night and Tuesday morning, Pastor AIDS and Miles opened the doors of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church.
“When difficult times and situations come out around us and become part of us, we should reach out, touch and help someone along the way,” he said.
News of Devah’s passing broke around 10am on Tuesday. Within hours, the monument began to take shape.
As the day went by, dozens of cars came by the bridge. Some left the flowers, others left the balloons. I stopped for a while to pay their respects. When she left school, a group of her classmates gathered.
“She was like a sister to me.”
“She was my friend.”
“Sweet dream, Deva.”
In the wake of the tragedy, Brenham ISD expanded its counseling and support services to students and staff. Also, bus routes have been adjusted as heavy rain continued until Tuesday.
Through grief, the close community has done their best.
“We’re a family community. Brenham is a small, home community and we feel that way. When we’re struggling, we’re all struggling,” added the city’s official Melinda Gordon.
Devah’s classmates tell KBTX that she is loved and they will truly miss their friends.
