With the decisive doubleheader between the New York Mets and Atlanta Braves now in the rearview mirror, the picture for the MLB playoffs is finally set.
And neither of the reigning pennant winners is in the field.
The Arizona Diamondbacks were still alive going into Monday, needing either the Mets or Braves to sweep two make-up games. However, New York won Game 1 and Atlanta won Game 2, leaving a three-way tie for the final two wild-card spots in the National League.
Arizona lost the tiebreaker and was eliminated from playoff contention as a result.
The American League side’s spots were decided on Saturday, and the Texas Rangers were already gone. They are 8.0 games into the playoffs and four teams out of the final Wild Card spot in the American League.
As StatMuse Baseball noted, this is the first time since 2007 that both World Series teams missed the following year’s postseason. That year, both the St. Louis Cardinals and Detroit Tigers failed to make the playoffs.
The 2007 Tigers finished second in the American League wild card race with 88 wins and 74 losses, at a time when only one wild card in each league advanced to the postseason, but the 2024 Diamondbacks finished fourth in the National League wild card race with 89 wins and 73 losses.
And just like the 2007 Cardinals, the reigning World Series champion Rangers finished with a record of 78 wins and 84 losses.
The Diamondbacks had a better regular season record in 2024 than they did in 2023, but an 84-78 record was good enough to reach last October. They overcame the postseason and won their first National League pennant in 20 years, but fell just short of winning their second World Series.
Meanwhile, the Rangers sneaked in as a wild card team with a record of 90 wins and 72 losses, winning the championship for the first time in franchise history. A 12-game drop in the standings in 2024 puts their winning streak in jeopardy, and their 24-year streak without a World Series win will be extended by at least one more season.
