The past year and change have been nothing but life-changing for Matthew Golden, a wide receiver for the Texas Longhorns.
After transferring from Houston, Golden became the Longhorns’ go-to receiver, carrying him at 58 reception for a team-high 987 yards and nine touchdowns. He was also responsible for some monumental plays. Most notably, they keep Texas season alive with overtime in the Peach Bowl against Arizona.
Now his NFL dream is about to come true and he will be there to experience it.
Dane Brugler of Athletic reports that he has accepted an invitation to the NFL Draft on Green Bay, Wisc. Most players in the draft are predicted to be their first round pick, and the Golden – if not the first, is expected to be one of the first wide receivers off the board – will quickly fit in.
In addition to his powerful productions in Texas and before that in Houston, Golden also brings impressive athleticism to the table. The Houston native ran a 4.29 seconds 40-yard dash in the NFL scouting combine, ranking number one in wide receivers and second out of all players. He burned up against the defensive backs on a daily basis, so his speed shows so much on the field.
Golden is the 19th overall player in the consensus rankings of the NFL Mock Draft Database. He is the 11th and the second-highest receiver behind Arizona’s Tetaro Amakumillan.
Some teams picking in the medium first round are required with wide receivers. These teams include the Arizona Cardinals (16th overall), the Seattle Seahawks (18th overall), the Denver Broncos (20), the Pittsburgh Steelers (21), the Los Angeles Chargers (22), the Green Bay Packers (23) and the Houston Texans (25). So the range seems to be a sweet spot for him to go to.
The Longhorns came in 27th in the first round last year for the Kansas City Chiefs, becoming the first Texas player to score in the Super Bowl. Now they were able to send another quick wideout to the pros.
