In May 2023, 44-year-old Leidy Areli Hernandez Lopez pleaded guilty to one count of a conspiracy to commit wire fraud, which stems from his role in selling temporary Texas license plates. She served in federal prison for 30 months and was sentenced to pay more than $316,000 in reparations.
According to court documents, Lopez and his co-conspirators used the internet to buy and sell fraudulent state-issued buyer tags and sell exchange proceeds from illegal tag sales.
As part of her plea, Lopez confirmed that she and her co-conspirators had emailed fake buyer tags to buyers across the United States, including New York and Washington, DC.
