“Each year, more than 70,000 Texans enroll in adult education programs to increase their income in the Texas workforce.”
Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) has awarded $83,030,502 to 40 grant recipients across the state in support of adult education and literacy. Funded by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Career, Technical and Adult Education, these grants will provide ongoing educational opportunities for 70,000 adult learners served by TWC’s Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) program.
“Each year, more than 70,000 Texans enroll in adult education programs to increase their incomes in the Texas workforce,” said TWC Chairman Brian Daniel. “These AEL programs help adult learners gain the skills they need to succeed.”
The recent grant from TWC will support efforts to develop and strengthen AEL activities across the state, including high school diploma preparation and integrated English literacy and civics education. Additional resources for AEL programs will help even more adult learners across Texas improve their English language proficiency, earn their high school diploma, earn industry-recognized credentials and gain digital literacy.
“Adult education and literacy help build career pathways, improve skills and create life-changing opportunities for Texans,” said Labor Representative TWC Commissioner Alberto Treviño III. “These grants demonstrate how TWC is empowering Texans to achieve their educational goals and pursue careers in our growing economy.”
TWC works with qualified providers across Texas to offer AEL services that help Texans build the confidence and skills to succeed in the workplace. AEL services are provided free of charge to adult learners who lack functional literacy or who do not have a high school diploma (or a recognized equivalent). Eligibility also applies to English language learners, including non-English-speaking professionals who have earned a degree or certification in their home country and immigrated to the United States.
“Education is one of the most powerful tools for achieving career success and prosperity,” said TWC Commissioner Joe Esparza, who represents employers. “The Texas Workforce Commission’s commitment to educating all Texans not only strengthens our workforce system, but also enhances Texas’ reputation as a great state to do business.”
