Edinburgh – Angelo Cabral, a graduate student at UTRGV, led the pitching full game shutout of his first career Vaqueros was on the fourth-largest in program history at UTRGV Baseball Stadium in front of a crowd of 5,111, with a 10-0 victory over Texas Southern Tigers on Tuesday.
UTRGV has been voted for the second week in a row in a poll by the USA Today Coaches and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Association.
Vaqueros (15-3), the second team at NCAA RPI, is tied to the fifth-best start in program history, tied to the best overall start since launching Program Record 16-1 in 1979.
Cabral (2-0) retired from the first 10 batters he faced, facing only one with a minimum of 21 batters throughout the season-high 7.0 innings. He allowed three singles, but one tra (8-13) stole and the other was erased by double play. Cabral threw 53 of his 78 pitches (67.9%) for strike, with no one walking, on a season-high nine strikeouts.

Freshman Cameron Carter led Vaqueros offensively by scoring a career-high 3-4 with RBI, earning a career-high 3-4 and two runs. Graduate student Edinburg Vera graduate Isaac Lopez went 2-2 on two runs. Graduate student PSJA High alumnus Jacob Sanchez finished 2-2 with doubles, walks, pitch hits, RBI and two runs.
Carter and Lopez opened three innings with a single against Cameron Walton (0-1) and placed the runner in the corner. Junior Thomas Williams hit a sacrifice fly before sophomore Easton Moomau hit an RBI double. After a groundout, one batsman moved Moumau to third place, Sanchez hit an RBI single to lift Vaqueros 3-0.
Carter and Lopez also led fourth in singles. After the ground ball pushed the runner forward, Moumau hit a sacrifice fly, with senior Stephen Lancia hitting an RBI single to make the score 5-0.
Sanchez and junior Rene Garban held five innings on the walk. After the error loaded the base, Carter hit an RBI single and Williams came up with one RBI groundout, bringing the score to 7-0.
In the sixth time, Lancia and sophomore Armani Reigoza took the lead by running a home run to the left. Sanchez followed with a double, moving to third place on a flyball, scoring on a senior Hank Warren’s ground ball, bringing the score to 10-0.
UTRGV and Texas Southern will complete this two-game series on Wednesday Wicked at 6:30pm at UTRGV Baseball Stadium. In honor of Wicked, a hit film and musical, fans are encouraged to come in the best outfits from Wicked, as well as the chance to gain popularity by competing in costume contests.
