PLANO – Parents and family members in Plano are concerned after a shocking video posted on social media of a car hitting a girl who was crossing the road and then driving away.
The incident occurred around 8 a.m. Tuesday morning at the intersection of Westridge Drive and Wilson Drive.
Home surveillance video shows the girl being struck by a car as she crossed the road. The driver stopped briefly, but then drove off.
Sherry Barker, who lives down the street from where the incident happened, said: “It was scary and she was just screaming.” “The girl was across the street and was just about to step onto the curb when she was hit.”
Barker, who has two grandchildren who often walk through the neighborhood to and from school, expressed shock and concern.
Mr Barker said of the driver: “It’s just a horrible feeling what happened. Not only did she reverse up to start, she sped away.”
A neighbor who caught the hit-and-run on camera said he heard the girl’s screams, but the girl managed to walk away and continue to school.
CBS News Texas spoke to the girl’s brother, who declined to speak on camera but said her sister had scrapes and bruises and was mostly just shaken up. She said her sister refused to go to the hospital but her family filed a police report. He hopes the driver turns himself in.
Neighbors hope the incident will serve as a reminder to motorists to drive slowly, especially during school hours, and to always look out for pedestrians and children.
“People just need to look at what they’re doing when they’re in the car. They need to really understand what you’re asking or what your message is. It’s just, you have to wait until you can pull over and deal with it.” Barker said.
Police have not yet identified the driver but are continuing to investigate. The girl’s family reported the incident to the school.
