Ormiston is in just his first year as head coach but led West Texas FC to the Lone Star Conference Finals.
MIDLAND, Texas — West Texas FC won the Lone Star Conference finals with a 4-1 victory over Denton Diablos FC at Astound Broadband Stadium under the direction of first-year head coach David Ormiston.
However, it wasn’t always smooth sailing as the team got off to a tough start.
But once the team got going, they never looked back, sprinting all the way to the Lone Star Conference Finals and hoisting the trophy.
“The first few games we didn’t do so well but we still performed well and we just had some sloppy moments,” Ormiston said. “So we always knew we were capable. Summer League is the early stages of it and as you saw in the first few games, once we got some home games in front of our fans and the players got used to each other, the results started to come.”
Ormiston, however, was not about to take all the credit for himself.
He thanked his team for taking to the field every game and executing the game plan, and he also thanked the staff around him for helping to build a team that was capable of bringing home the gold medal.
“This is a team effort. The guys we have here are obviously top class, a really good group. My assistant Scotty Murray is my right-hand man. I couldn’t do it without him,” Ormiston said. “And Frederick Clauson on the back line, he helps us off the field and behind the scenes. He’s really been a help. And also, our owner and our director of operations, Melissa, they say this is a team effort, so it feels really good to win together.”
But Ormiston said the most important groups don’t even have an official position on the ground.
Fans who came to Saturday’s game with face paint, drums, noise makers and chants played a key role in boosting the team’s morale and helping maintain their unbeaten home record.
“You may be tired physically and mentally but you have a 12th man and, as cliché as it sounds, the fans are your 12th man,” Ormiston said. “That’s what motivates you and that’s a big reason why we’re winning at home.”
