The City of Wimberley was recognized as a Bird City Texas Community in 2025. This is a unique honor bestowed by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in partnership with Audubon Texas. This prestigious certification recognizes Wimberley’s commitment to protecting and enhancing bird habitat, conservation education efforts, and promoting a sustainable environment for both wildlife and residents.
“Being selected as a Bird City Texas community is an extraordinary accomplishment for Wimberley. It reflects the dedication of our residents, businesses, and the city to prioritizing sustainability and coexistence with nature. ” said Wimberley Parks and Recreation Director Richard Shaver. “We are humbled and proud to join this elite group of cities committed to protecting birds and their habitat.”
Bird City Texas is a recognition program designed to recognize cities that excel in protecting birds and their habitats where people live, work, and recreate. To achieve this recognition, communities must implement science-based initiatives and community-centered actions. Since its inception in 2020, only 10 cities have earned this designation, making Wimberley’s accomplishment even more significant.
Wimberley’s certification helps us establish policies to reduce light pollution to ensure the safe movement of birds, host educational events to engage residents in conservation efforts, and create natural spaces that are bird-friendly. It reflects the city’s commitment to implementing landscape projects.
Wimberley’s location in the heart of the Texas Hill Country makes it an important stopover site for migratory birds and is home to a large number of bird species year-round. The Bird City Texas designation emphasizes the city’s ecological importance while providing tangible benefits to the local community.
Research shows that bird-friendly habitats increase property values, reduce environmental management costs, attract tourists, especially from birdwatchers, and contribute to Texas’ $1.8 billion wildlife viewing economy.
Residents and visitors are invited to learn more about the area’s diverse bird species by attending an upcoming bird seminar hosted by Wimberley Parks and Recreation. Visit Wimberley Park Sandrek. For more information, visit com/programs/bird-seminar/.
“This recognition belongs to the people of Wimberley,” Shaver said. “Our collective efforts have made this possible, and we are excited to continue leading the way in environmental stewardship.”
