SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a Spokane Valley woman on suspicion of trying to steal a car from Texas.
Spokane area emergency dispatchers alerted deputies Thursday morning to an alert from the Real-Time Crime Center that a Dodge Durango with Florida license plates had been stolen, according to the sheriff’s office.
The Durango was last seen heading south on North Argonne Road, the sheriff’s office said. Officers found the Durango on North Argonne Road near East Montgomery Avenue. Officers then took the driver into custody, who was later identified as 33-year-old Morgan A. Jewell.
Jewell told deputies he rented a car in Dallas, Texas, in October and drove to Spokane, the sheriff’s office said. According to the sheriff’s office, Jewell admitted he had planned to keep the Durango for just one day, but was too busy to return it.
According to the sheriff’s office, Jewell told police he had tried to contact the rental company to extend the rental agreement but was unsuccessful. Jewell also told deputies she received a message from the rental company saying she would report the car stolen if she didn’t return it.
Officers obtained a police report from the Dallas-Fort Worth Airport Police Department that showed Jewell had rented the Durango. The rental company pursued charges against Jewell.
Jewell was booked into the Spokane County Jail on a charge of possession of a stolen motor vehicle.
The Dallas-Fort Worth Airport Police Department was notified that the vehicle had been recovered, but the rental car company could not be contacted, the sheriff’s office said.
