AUSTIN – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s basketball team lost to the No. 5 Texas Longhorns, 94-35, in their final non-conference game Sunday at the Moody Center in Austin.
Junior forward Charlotte O’Keefe had a game-high 11 rebounds and graduate student Cade Hackarot scored a team-high 7 points on 3-of-3 from the free throw line to lead UTRGV (6 wins) 7 losses, 1 win, 1 loss (Southland) Conference). Senior guard Tierra Trotter, freshman guard Gianna Angiolet and sophomore guard Jada Holliman each added six points.
Kyla Oldaker led #5 Texas (13-1, 0-0 Southeastern Conference) with 21 points and had a perfect performance from the field. Madison Booker had 14 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.
A stifling Texas defense set the tone from the jump, and a full-court press held UTRGV to just five points in the first quarter. However, the Vaqueros showed resilience in a close second quarter as Texas narrowly outscored UTRGV 22-17.
UTRGV scored twice in the second quarter, starting with freshman guard Kayla Lorenz hitting her first 3-pointer to spark the offense and scoring five points without a score. The Vaqueros made 5 of 6 shots from the free throw line, going on a 6-0 run. Holliman then hit a pull-up three to cut the lead to 10 points at 29-19. Holliman added six points with his second goal and Trotter added four as the Vaqueros picked up the pace and tightened up their defense.
Angiolet, the former Central Texas Women’s Basketball Player of the Year, made back-to-back buckets in her hometown midway through the third quarter. However, Texas’ defense dominated in the second half, holding the Vaqueros to 13 points for the win. The Longhorns forced 37 turnovers and overcame the fumble to score 47 points.
UTRGV’s next stop is the first SLC road trip of the season. The Vaqueros play at Southeastern Thursday at 6 p.m.
